"Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps)" est sorti le 12 septembre 1980 et est souvent considéré par les critiques et les fans comme le dernier d’une grande série d’albums "classiques", série ayant débuté en 1969 avec l’album "Space Oddity".
Après 3 albums très expérimentaux, la Trilogie Berlinoise, excellente mais plutôt difficile d’accès, Bowie a pour intention de remonter aux sommets des charts quand il enregistre cet album. Certes il ne va pas proposer une collection de hits singles sur l’album et se laisser de la place pour l’expérimentation, mais on sent que "Scary Monsters" est pensé pour être un peu plus accessible, un peu plus grand public.
